Meet the Grapevine Team Behind Mainspring Garage Door Co.

We’re the crew that shows up when your garage door won’t budge at 6 a.m. or when you’re staring at a busted spring and wondering if you can still get to work. Every person on this page lives in the Grapevine area or close enough to claim it. What ties us together isn’t a handbook. It’s the K.E.Y.S. code we train under, and the fact that none of us can stand leaving a job half-finished.

Our People

Carl Dutton, Owner

I started Mainspring in 1984, back when Grapevine was mostly farmland and a few wineries. The name comes from the mainspring, the coil that carries the full weight of a garage door. Without it, nothing moves. That seemed like the right thing to build a company around. I still answer the phone myself some nights, and I still drive out when a job goes sideways. After 42 years, I’ve seen every brand that ever mattered in this market, from the old Raynor torsion systems to the newest LiftMaster smart openers. I keep a 1978 Craftsman wrench in my truck that my father gave me. It’s not sentimental. It just fits certain bolts better than anything made since.

Marcus T., Lead Technician

Marcus has been with us fourteen years, and he specializes in the jobs other companies walk away from. Custom wood doors in the historic district near Main Street, high-lift conversions for RV bays out toward Trophy Club, retrofitting modern openers onto 1980s track systems without tearing out the header. He’s factory-certified on Chamberlain, Genie, and Wayne Dalton, and he’s the one who trains new hires on torsion spring safety. Off the clock, Marcus restores vintage motorcycles in his garage in Colleyville. He says the patience transfers. A seized engine and a seized torsion tube both require you to stop, look, and not force anything.

Elena R., Senior Installer

Elena runs our new-door and replacement installs across Grapevine, Southlake, and into northeast Fort Worth. She came to us from commercial construction, so she thinks in plumb lines and load calculations. That matters here, because Grapevine’s clay soil shifts. A door installed perfectly level in March can rack by August if the footer moves. Elena checks the jamb, the header, and the concrete before she hangs the first panel. She’s installed Clopay, Amarr, and custom-built doors in homes from Silver Lake to the shores of Grapevine Lake. Her detail: she keeps a small level in her back pocket, not her tool bag. Says she’s lost too many to truck seats.

James K., Service Coordinator

James is the voice you hear when you call (817) 668-7138 at midnight on a Saturday. He’s been with us eight years, and he knows which technician lives closest to which neighborhood, who has the right springs on their truck, and whether your “grinding noise” is likely a gear, a bearing, or a door that’s come off its track. He doesn’t read from a script. He asks questions, gives you a real window for arrival, and stays on the line if you need to describe something weird your opener’s doing. James grew up in Grapevine, graduated from Grapevine High School, and still lives near Bear Creek Park. He knows which streets flood in a hard rain and which ones have the low branches that scrape a service truck.

Darius P., Apprentice Technician

Darius joined us in 2023 after four years as an HVAC installer. He’d handled enough sheet metal and electrical that garage door systems weren’t foreign, but springs were new territory. He’s spent his apprenticeship under Marcus, learning torsion and extension spring replacement, cable routing, and the specific headaches of Texas heat on opener electronics. Darius is the one we send when a customer needs a second opinion on another company’s estimate, because he hasn’t learned to see what he expects to see yet. He looks at what’s actually there. He lives in Euless, plays defensive line in a local rec football league, and has already absorbed the rule that you never leave a customer’s driveway without testing the door three times.

One Standard, Every Job

Every person on this page works under the same 90-Day Done Right Promise. The language is on every invoice: if it’s not right, we come back. No paperwork, no arguing. That promise travels with us from Grapevine to every other community we serve, but it’s enforced by the people you just read about. Marcus checks Elena’s header work on a tricky install. Elena spots Darius if he’s uncertain about a spring wind direction. James coordinates it all so a customer isn’t told “next Tuesday” when the garage is wide open tonight. We’re not a franchise. We’re not a call center routing you to whoever’s available. We’re a local crew with a local phone number, and we’ve been at it since 1984. When we say we’ll be there, we will be there.
